Sculpture Graveyard - Raising the dead
Sculpture Graveyard - Raising the dead is an ongoing project in which I am recycling old sculptures into new. The nature of my ephemeral work has left me with many skeletons in the paddock which over time are forming new skins and structural deviations to reincarnate into new sculptural forms.
This process began in 2011 when 'The Grass is Green', affectionately know as Lorna incarnated as the work 'Now and Then' that went on to win the peoples choice award at Lorne Sculpture. |
From there on we saw, 'Mother's Milk' evolve into 'How Now', 'Part of the Landscape' become 'Poo Roo' and 'Rock of All Age's went their own ways diverting into 'Hybrid' and 'Country Living', but what's in stall for the baby rock?
As an on-going project, Raising the Dead re-invigorates ephemeral sculptures and installations to expand on the idea of recycling materials and furthers concepts of change and impermanence that is an integral part of the work.
So what do you do with all those life drawings under the bed? and what's in store for the artificial grass from the Chewton school oval?........

RECENT REVIVALS
Re-Revival - Rock of All Ages come Hybrid has now teamed up with my original grass sculpture, Keep off the Grass to combine as House of Cards, my current work in progress. This framework was de-constructed and re-welded at home during the Stage 4 covid lockdown during my postponed artist residency and will feature at "Home" exhibition coming up in August 2023.
The Chewton Primary School oval was reborn as a map of Australia jigsaw puzzle that forms the base of the work,The Wool Trade, 2019 . Headless hybrid lamb/children feeding, frolicking and forming themselves upon the artificial grassy nation are made from the artist and her daughter's woollen jumpers. Also manifesting as Tree Disease, 2019, the artificial grass spread itself upon the foliage of the lot19 precinct and will soon be featured as Pastoral Landscape, 2023 a grassy humpy come hillside at the exhibition Home.
Rock of All Ages, 2011 'Baby Rock' has metamorphosed into a suspended heart shaped work called Suspense, 2019. In fitting with the Feeling Sheepish exhibition and theme, Suspense is also made from the artist's loved and repurposed red woollen jumpers. Hanging from the ceiling the heart's arteries and veins unravel red and blue wool upon the floor to form a colourful woollen web that shapes Australia.
While sitting the Feeling Sheepish exhibition, I took the opportunity to work on the Country Living, 2019 installation. This work evolved from the third rock from the Rock of All Ages, 2011 family. It also evolved over the exhibition period inviting audience members to sit in the humpy and cut and paste images from the 'Country Living' magazines provided to add to the collage.

Walk of Life The old life drawings under the bed were re-incarnated as "The Walk of Life" audience participation installation at this years Easter Confest at Moulamein, NSW. Audience members walked naked through the art maze for some naked/nude interaction. At the end of the exhibition the drawings were burnt and the ashes offered back to the forest. |
