Excavation - Spring Sculpture Prize

October 13 - 27 2024

The year is 3024. Excavations have commenced on an archaeological dig on a Northern suburb of Greater Melbourne. The area, at one point in ancient history known as Castlemaine, with the only recorded fact being the 2024 establishment of an outlet of the world wide mega Corp. Woolies.
Volunteers are being sought to help unearth the site and shed light on this little known history.

NB. With their most recent outlet opening on Neptunes' third moon, Woolies sponsorship of this dig is greatly acknowledged.

Excavation Update: 15/10/24

The sun was shining high on Sunday and the spring sculptures had sprung at Lot19’s annual sculpture show. Volunteers and spectators flocked to site no. 6 to partake, spectate and speculate the long awaited archaeological dig that got underway at 2pm. Volunteer excavator, Eleve was first on the scene eager to work and uncover what lay beneath the surface. By 2:45pm volunteer diggers had their first sighting, discovering a cornerstone, bronze in color and shaped like a bullion - something from the gold fields perhaps? The brick seemed to be joined to more of its kind. Approximately half an hour later a colored form began to appear through the soil. Stop that Dot Archaeologist in charge of the excavation, Candy Stevens, had this to say;
"During a recent removal of a tree from this site, remains were discovered suggesting that it was a possible resting place of an ancient man. When my team heard rumors of this we were compelled to investigate. The discovery of the remains has generated great anticipation within the archaeological community. I had a hunch that the remains might lead to more insight as to the life and times of this particular location, but we weren't expecting what we found.”

Since uncovering some of the evidence, volunteer crews have slowed works to carefully scrape and brush away sediment surrounding what appears to be some sort of human form or perhaps a sarcophagus.
"Early on in the dig volunteers had speculated finding a wombat that was possibly related to the one in the gallery. Also of discovering a family of four judging by the site dimensions amongst the possibilities, perhaps they were onto something” stated Candy.

With weather conditions deteriorating during the week a temporary marquee has been set up to protect the site and allow further work and research to continue next week.

Stop That Dot Archaeology Inc. would like to thank the following excavation volunteers; Eleve`, Freddy, Charlotte, Lenny, Trevor, Lizi, Lesley, Sharelle, Deb, Claire, Sophie, Abigail, Mike, Taryn, Dean, Ewan, Aubrey, Rudy, Colleen, Lily and the Tonka team for which the dig would not be possible.
